What is a Companionship Support service?

Don’t need a nurse, just want a helping hand and some extra support for yourself or your loved one? If you have never used support services before, you may have so many questions about where to start or even what sort of support is out there. So what is a companionship service? And how does it work?

What is a Companionship service?

Since the kind of support received is unique to each individual person, companionship services can fall under a wide range of different terms – from disability support through to aged care, event buddies or home care services.

Home Care Heroes is NDIS-approved. Our companionship service provides personalised non-medical services, with an aim to improve an individual’s wellbeing and maintaining a positive state of mental health, as well as reducing feelings of loneliness, helping individuals improve their independence, learn new skills and reach their personal goals. A good companionship service will also help Members engage and interact with their wider community all while building friendships and meaningful connections.

Are Heroes Support Workers?

While we can work alongside medical services and can connect our Members with the appropriate channels, our Heroes are not disability support workers or nurses.

Our Heroes are everyday people (awesome people) from the community who want to make a positive difference in the world, and are looking for rewarding and flexible work in their local area. Home Care Heroes has Heroes with a wide range of skillsets and languages based throughout the greater Sydney region, Wollongong and the Illawarra region, Newcastle and the Central Coast region of NSW.

All Heroes are fully vetted with Police Checks and reference checks, and go through a comprehensive on-boarding process including a face-to-face induction and an online values test to ensure they meet our standards.

What Kind of Support Do Heroes Provide?

Heroes help others achieve their goals and reduce feelings of loneliness for any reason such as aging, illness or disability. Heroes provide companionship and non-medical support such as playing chess with elderly relatives who have arthritis, or such as helping someone with a disability to get out in the fresh air to exercise safely and with supervision where needed.

Our Heroes can help with transport to appointments, can help you stay active, provide regular check-in visits, meal preparation, light housekeeping and be event buddies – whatever non-medical support you need!

How Does it work?

You can become a Member either to find support for yourself or to find support on behalf of someone else. Members create a free account and tell us a little about yourself and your personality, so you can get matched with Heroes in your local community who hold the right skills for what you need and share the same interests as the person receiving care – helping genuine bonds of companionship to form.

After telling us a little about yourself or your loved one who needs support, the next step is to post your first mission. A ‘mission’ is a job post where can go into more detail about the kind of support you’re looking for, for example if you need someone to help you buy groceries, learn new computer skills, help you to write a resumé or someone to go for a walk with. During this stage, you can also directly message people who seem suitable for what you need.

Then the final step is to meet your match to make a new friend, learn a new skill and have fun while you’re at it!
