Key Tips for Accessing the NDIS

Introduced in 2013, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) system continues to be rolled out across Australia. NDIS providers such as Home Care Heroes are organisations that can deliver disability support and home care services to NDIS participants. Accessing the NDIS can be a confusing and complex experience if you are new to the NDIS and don’t understand the lingo or how the process works. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Develop a Good Understanding of How the NDIS Operates

Even if the NDIS has not yet rolled out into your local area, in order to get the most out of the scheme to help you it’s beneficial to understand the basics about how the NDIS works, and what it can fund. Visit the NDIS website to find your local office, check to see if the NDIS is in your area and to find out if you are eligible to access NDIS funding. On this website you can also find NDIS information sessions in your area that you can attend, so you can ask any questions you have in person and get a better understanding.

Learn the NDIS Lingo

The NDIS is arranged into 15 support categories, all of which align to the purpose of the funded support and NDIS Outcomes. You will receive a specific funding allocation under each category when you receive your NDIS plan. These categories are arranged into three key sections:

Core Supports: A support that enables a participant to complete activities of daily living and enables them to work towards their goals.

Capacity Building Supports: A support that enables a participant to build their independence and skills.

Capital Supports: This is an investment. Examples may include assistive technologies, equipment and home modifications.

Local Area Coordinators: are the public face of the NDIS, contracted by the National Disability Insurance Agency to deliver the NDIS in local communities.

Support Coordinators: connect participants with an NDIS plan with supports and services in the community, thereby putting your plan into action.
