A Reason to Wear Red This Valentine’s Day

A Reason to Wear Red This Valentine’s Day

There is so much excitement and buzz on social media surrounding Valentine’s Day, but did you know that Friday 14th February is also National Wear Red Day in Australia? National Wear Red Day aims to raise awareness for heart disease, as well as raising much-needed money towards innovative research that will help to prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease.

Heart disease is an umbrella term that is used to describe a wide range of conditions that affect your heart. Heart disease is unfortunately quite common, impacting two out of every three families in Australia. It is the leading cause of death and disability in Australia, with 18,590 Australian lives lost to heart disease in 2017 alone. This means fifty-one people died from heart disease every single day in Australia in 2017, that equates to one death every twenty-eight minutes! This is one of many reasons why developing and maintaining a fit, healthy and happy lifestyle is so important.

In fact, did you know that people who are feeling socially isolated or have depression are at a greater risk of heart disease? More and more, the detrimental impacts of loneliness on an individual’s health are gradually coming to light. An alarming fifty-five per cent of the Australian population feel they lack companionship at least sometimes. Loneliness and social isolation are becoming a health epidemic worldwide, and research now reveals that lacking meaningful social connections is as damaging to our health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day, while the effect on mortality is comparable to risk factors such as obesity. This is why companionship and a positive state of mental health are so important to help prevent heart disease as well as many other health issues.
